Abstract

Different teaching methodologies in education have been widely discussed. The choice of a specific approach should take into account the social, cultural and cognitive factors of the students in question so that it satisfactorily meets their individual learning means. This study aimed to evaluate laboratory practices as a didactic-pedagogical tool in science teaching, in order to improve and complement the traditional “textbook” resource. The research was carried out at the Lourdes Ortiz Municipal School - Santos/SP, linked to PIBID (Institutional Program of Teaching Initiation Scholarships) during the year 2015 with students in the 6th grade of elementary school. A qualitative empirical experimental research methodology was used in which some practical resources that could induce changes in perception on the part of the students were adopted as an influence tool. Thus, the extent of the effect of the intervention mechanism was evaluated through questionnaires, tests, observation of behavior and analysis of categorical content. These observations were made by five PIBID scholarship holders, taking into account their knowledge prior to and after the classes. The topic raised was “soils”, and they carried out practical experiments on soil sliding and detritivorous animals. As a result, there was a clear improvement in learning, also generating more participatory classes, where the student proposed to carry out the experiment. The oral questions about the concepts taught flowed in a very natural and objective manner. Some students even showed scientific interest in other areas of biology, contributing with guidelines for new projects at school. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of practical resources in science teaching, also presenting subjects that allow the student to associate their reality with the scientific-biological concepts presented.
