Abstract
The current increase in the number of suicides among police officers leads us to question the existence of programs that focus on the mental health of these workers and the possible impacts on public safety. The general objective of this article is to evaluate the work environment of police officers and the possible impacts caused in our society, resulting from the lack of care for the mental health of these workers. It presents the work environment of the police officer, contextualizing it with statistics on health/illness, suicide and crime rates, and discusses public policies and factors that possibly negatively influence the health of police officers. To this end, an exploratory bibliographical research was carried out and the hypothetical-deductive method was used in order to answer the following question: Would it be possible for Brazil to maintain sustainable development and reduce crime without prioritizing the health of police officers? At the end of the work, the question raised was answered with a negative answer.
