Abstract
The disposal of toxic waste and its storage is a problem in today's society, due to the need to protect the environment, which has already been so damaged and degraded by human beings. One of the solutions found by the authorities and companies that operate and operate in the Port of Santos was to open an underwater pit, located near the Piaçaguera Canal, covering the Santos/Cubatão estuary. Sediments resulting from dredging and industrial activity in the region are dumped into this pit, and this pit is duly sealed to prevent water contamination. The objective is to present the problems associated with the underwater pit in Baixada Santos and its possible impacts. A bibliographic research methodology was used to meet the objective, seeking information already published on the subject. It was found that although the responsible authorities claim that the underwater pit is safe, the inhabitants of the region do not feel confident and believe that there may be contamination of the water.
