CONTAINER CHASSIS POOL IN BRAZIL: INTERMODAL MODEL PROPOSAL Jonathas Ferreira Dias

Main Article Content

Abstract

This article is an implementation proposition of a pool-based chassis sharing model, inspired by the north-american system, presented as an expansion of subject presented in the author’s graduation in Logistics and Transportation final paper about the equipments usage in port logistics, its particularities, and comparison to the brazilian system. The idea then was to optimize the truck drayage in the container transportation process, as well as the consequent improvement in the domestic truck fleet. The conclusion reached was that, due to the national infrastructure condition and high costs, it wasn’t logistically nor economically feasible for the logistics supply chain stakeholders to adhere to that system. The author revisits the subject in the light of recent discoveries. The model is being abandoned in favor of an operation similar to the brazilian, i.e. the chassis owning responsibility is being transferred to the motor carriers. There are sharing systems in that country that constitute an optimization in the equipment usage and that would entail in an alternative model for new domestic transportation players, with a potential for cost reduction. In the first place, the subject is reviewed with its conclusions taken from the mentioned final paper, followed by the definition of an international chassis and its historical context. Next, it is described the forms in which the equipments are used by the stakeholders, and then chassis pool operation models are dealt in detail. Finally, after the collection of relevant domestic and international data, a pool sharing system is proposed for the national market.
