The periphery of capitalism in the periphery of the city of São Paulo inequality and precariousness for "social welfare"
Main Article Content
Abstract
Context: This paper aims to highlight issues that are exacerbated in the peripheries of capitalism, more specifically in the city of São Paulo. Problem: The dynamics of the periphery and center of capitalism encompass abysmal inequalities between the conditions of the countries belonging to each of these blocs, but within the capitalist periphery there are inequalities that are as problematic as the macro periphery-center relationship of capitalism. It is necessary to understand and analyze, based on empirical data from the peripheral reality, the reality and severity of the periphery-center relationship also in the periphery of capitalism. Understanding the Brazilian reality amid social inequality and the influence this has on the city of São Paulo and its specificities, while recognizing that it is impossible to exhaust the subject in a single article, is one of the objectives of this article. Objectives: The inequality and chasms between the periphery and the center of the city go far beyond the distance between one point and another, but economic and social relations also deserve attention in order to identify the weaknesses in the relationship that curtails the potential of a people. Understanding the structural relationship is essential to clarify that it is impossible to devise individual solutions for the periphery of a single city, but to consider whether it is possible to mitigate disparities that make no political, economic, or social sense. Methods: Using analytical and descriptive research methods, a narrative review of the literature and bibliographic analysis were conducted. Results: The research indicators used in the article showed that inequality in the municipality of São Paulo directly impacts the mortality rate, with the average age of those living in peripheral regions being 23 years lower than the average for middle-class regions of the city. Conclusion: Inequalities on the periphery of capitalism are limiting factors that hinder the development of peripheral areas, and are one of the factors that perpetuate the political, economic, and social ills that directly affect the lives of the population of São Paulo.
